On  13 March 2024, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom announced the launch of the preparation of the Airport Line general plan and the related soil and bedrock surveys.

The general plan defines the location and space requirements of the railway and its relationship to the surrounding land use. It also sets out the basic technical and traffic solutions of the line and the principles for combating environmental drawbacks.

The general plan phase began in March 2024 with soil and bedrock surveys. Studies will be carried out throughout the Airport Line project area, both in the area of the railway alignment and near the related structures, such as access tunnels and shafts. The studies provide more detailed information on soil types and bedrock properties for planning purposes.

The Airport Line project area is located in four municipalities: Helsinki, Vantaa, Tuusula and Kerava.

The general plan for the Airport Line is estimated to be completed at the end of 2025. During the preparation of the general plan, public events will be organised where people can familiarise themselves with the draft plans and express their opinions. In the next phase, the planning work will continue with the preparation of the railway plan, which will also take about two years.

The Airport Line is a new planned railway connection that will run from Pasila via Helsinki Airport to Kytömaa, north of Kerava. The line has connections to both the main line north and the Lahti direct line. The total length of the Airport Line is 30 kilometres, of which 28 kilometres are located in the tunnel. The Airport Line will create direct long-distance train connections to the airport and enable faster commuter train connections to the airport. In addition to faster travel times, it will increase rail capacity on the congested Pasila–Kerava route, thus improving the operational reliability of train traffic.

Sitowise's sub-consultant will be Ramboll Finland Oy.
